Calathea and Alocasia are not beginner friendly plants. Let me tell you why!
- Calathea cons: Extremely dramatic plants, need lots and lots of light, high humidity, always seem to have a pest issue and in general a hard-to-care-for plant.
- Calathea pros: Leaves are amazing and they usually grow from rhizomes, which is an underground system of stems and is a cool growth structure!
------------------------------------
- Alocasia cons: Requires high humidity, moist but definitely not wet soil, prone to rot and spider mites, not stable, can drop all of its leaves in winter and go dormant, randomly decides to die and overall not beginner friendly if you don't have the right conditions, but it is a good plant if you want to challenge yourself! Just don't feel bad when it dies.
- Alocasia pros: Very rewarding growth, grows corms automatically and basically propagates itself!
