Chamaedorea Care Guide

Chamaedorea is a beautiful genus of palms, known for their elegant, skinny trunks and i have seen this plant in every single garden center/plant shop i´ve been to. In my experience, they can grow quite slow, but that is probably because i wasn´t giving it as much light as it needed.

Fun Fact: my first plant besides cacti was a Chamaedorea elegans! Bought it in 2022, died in 2024 because i neglected it...

Enough yapping, here is how to care for it:

-----------------------------------

PROPAGATION:

These plants eventually produce seeds, which you can immediatly use! To plant Chamaedorea seeds, first soak fresh seeds in warm/room temperature water for 24-48 hours, then plant them about 1 centimeter deep in some soil, keep it moist and it will sprout within a month or 5. You can also divide them, as they grow from rhizomes, which is kind of like an underground system that can randomly sprout a new branch, and you can cut a part of the rhizome off and plant it in some soil.

-----------------------------------

WATERING:

Now here is where it starts getting tricky; The soil should be moist at all times, but defenitely not soggy because this plant is really sensitive to root rot. I totally get that some people don´t have the time to keep this plant moist, and that is okay. If the soil stays dry for a long time, the growth will drastically slow down, and the plant can slowely die. So, i´d say water when top inch of the soil is dry, and if you´d rather water on a schedule, water once a week with lots of light.

-----------------------------------

LIGHT REQUIREMENTS:

These plants loooves sun! It can tolerate shade, but that might slow down its growth (Because of the sunlight that gets turned into glucose/sugar during photosynthesis), so it´s better to put it in front of a window.

-----------------------------------

BLOOM:

Chamaedorea plants produce small, yellow flowers in the spring and summer months. Which you can cut off if you want the plant to focus on leaf or root growth, or just leave it,

MEDIUMS:

Since these plants prefer to be in moist soil, i would put it in a soil mix containing perlite, leca, universal potting soil & coco peat. This mix aerates the soil while holding moisture.
